A lighting bolt works well as an animated image sequence.
To make the sequence, first model a flat polygon, one segment,
about half a meter in size, with a 3 to 4 ration.
For a lightning bolt, you'd probably want to set a marble
surface texture of something like
Luminosity 100%
Surface Color 0,0,0
Surface Texture Type Marble
Texture Axis Depends on you model
Texture Size 75,75,75
Velocity 0,-5,5
Texture Color 255,255,255
Frequencies 5
Turbulence 125
Vein Sharpness 8
You'll probably need to play with the velocity a bit,
depending on what you're looking for, but hopefully,
